During Hedgehog Awareness Week, we had a special assembly to introduce how we are going to take part in becoming a 'Hedgehog Friendly School.' 

We read part of Laudato Si, written by Pope Francis, which asks us all to protect our common home, the earth. We thought about how each of us can make a difference to improve our local environment.

After reflecting on the words of Pope Francis we thought about how we can improve our school grounds for wildlife. We watched a short video which told us all about what a hedgehog looks like and how they behave. Did you know that hedgehogs are nocturnal, they have a furry tummy and a baby hedgehog is called a hoglet?  We have already started to make our school hedgehog friendly. Last year we placed a hedgehog home in a quiet part of our school grounds to attract hibernating hedgehogs and we have assigned part of the school grassed area to become a no-mow area.

In order to become an accredited Hedgehog Friendly School, there are many tasks that we need to complete in order to make the grounds accessible for hedgehogs and to raise awareness. We will be creating a school committee made up of children and staff to ensure that there is a clear plan of action.

We are very excited to be involved in this campaign and have our fingers crossed that we might possibly find a hedgehog in our school grounds.
