Happy New Year!
Welcome Back to Term 3 2025
We hope you have all had a lovely Christmas holiday and enjoyed all the festivities of the season!
January is an exciting time of renewal and resolutions so we will be starting off by looking at the Roman God Janus who had 2 faces- one who looked back to the past year and one who looked forward to the coming year. We will be thinking of the things we are proud of from 2024 and reflecting on what we have learned. Then we will be thinking about all the exciting new learning and friendships that we will make in 2025! The Year 5 team are looking forward to hearing your ideas and reflections.We have a super term ahead with some fun Viking learning where we will be thinking like historians and evaluating whether those Vicious Vikings deserve their violent reputation? We will be learning their saga stories and acting them out as well as writing our own. Please see the newsletter overview for all the other learning we will be doing this term.
Basic routines reminder:
- Please remember to bring a reading book you enjoy reading that is a little challenging but you can mostly read independently (you can borrow any from the class library and take them home to read, just please bring them back).
- Also remember your filled water bottle every day and a healthy snack for breaktime - an apple or fruit is best (no plastic waste if possible please).
- Please (adults) hand in to the office any medicines with the correct paper work - see the office about this if you are unsure.
- Please wear P.E uniform on Tuesday and Wednesday. Please name all kit to avoid mix ups. Pressed for time? - You don't need name tags - just write your child's initials and Y5 on the tag using a sharpie pen.
- Home learning will be set on a Friday
- You may wish to bring your own small pencil case containing a small ruler, rubber, pencil, sharpener and small glue stick. A few colouring pencils and high lighter may be useful but no felt tips or gel pens please. This is of course OPTIONAL and the school provides all equipment needed.
Home learning:
Spellings:
Children may be given spellings to learn most weeks and children are taught many ways to practise at home. Parents will also receive a hard copy of the spelling test every so often so you can see how your child is getting on and practise any errors. Spellings are easy for some and tricky for others - find the method that works for you. Handwriting them out 5 times with your best handwriting while saying the word aloud helps generally. You may enjoy calligraphy or giant chalks outside. Parents can help by being the teacher and doing a quick mock test to see which spellings you need to focus on.
You may be learning some of the first 100 most used (high frequency) words in English. Then you can move on to learn or revise the Year 3 and 4 statutory words. After that you will be moving onto the Year 5 and 6 statutory words. All children will take part in the weekly spelling lesson with Mr Turnbull. Some children will be given extra tuition.
Maths:
Maths will be set each week. The first term we will be learning times tables with rapid recall. Start testing yourself with x 2 in order then jumbled up. Then move on x 10 /x 5 /x 11 /x 3 x 6/ x 4 x 8/ x 7/ x 9 /x 12
If you have learned these, then move onto your division inverse
( e.g 3 x 6 = 18
6 x 3 = 18 so ....
18 divided by 6 = 3
18 divided by 3 = 6)
Then learn your 13 x table
Reading:
As always, reading for pleasure is a key part of home learning so please sign the reading record to let me know of great comprehension discussions taking place around a text or comments on fluency or expression. We are focussing on prediction (saying what you think will happen in the story) this term so jot down any you think of in your reading record so we can discuss in class.
